  10. nge-m  usic".   One of those articles,
  11. you  really  do  not need, because you
  12. know  how to create music in a perfect
  13. style  and  are just reading this crap
  14. to  see  the  major mistakes, the fool
  15. writing  this,  has made.  Yes, I know
  16. this   feeling  of  psycho-superiority
  17. very  well...  In this case however, I
  18. have  to  disappoint you, because this
  19. one is dealing with MUZAK and not with
  20. MUSIC.   "Where's the difference?" You
  21. may  ask  now  and  this is, what this
  22. article  is  about.  Then I first read

  28. @t5the expression "MUZAK" back in 1989, I
  29. thought  that  it is just one of those
  30. fabulous  scene-expression,  that make
  31. people  appear  cool and professional.
  32. In  fact,  today I think, it makes you
  33. appear   a   monosyllabic   low-budget
  34. clown...  ), but that is not the point
  35. at  all.   MUZAK  has  a  wide  deeper
  36. meaning  and  I  think  it is worth to
  37. choose  this  difference between MUSIC
  38. and MUZAK as a topic for this article.
  39. But  first  let  us have a look on the
  40. definition  of  MUSIC.  I will take my
  41. biiig   dictionary   and...    Just  a
  42. second...      dumdidum...     Master,
  43. milkshake, moon...  Ah, yes!  There it
  44. is:   MUSIC; (fem.) the art of sounds;

  48. cultural interchange; through internal
  49. rationalising     changes    of    the
  50. soundsystem, each culture build up its
  51. own  autarc  system;  in addition, the
  52. choice of natural instruments depended
  53. on    the    historical    background;
  54. stilistically,  music stands in direct
  55. relation  to other forms of art.  Very
  56. important and quite boring indeed!  As
  57. we   all   know,  there  are  alot  of
  58. different  variations  in  music.  The
  59. most  significant one is of course the
  60. one  from  ancient or classic style to
  61. modern  style.   Of  course  there are
  62. alot  of  variations  in  classic, but
  63. even more in modern style - just think
  64. of  Rock'n'Roll,  Pop,  Heavy  Metall,
  65. Reggae,  Ska,  Bluebeat,  Blues, Soul,
  66. Funk,  Punk,  Hardcore,  Acid, Techno,
  67. Techno-House,  ...   .  Those are just

  70. variation   in  style,  but  there  is
  71. another   factor   of  variying:   THE
  72. INTENSION  OF  THE  COMPOSER!!!  Music
  73. can   be,   for  example,  aggressive,
  74. relaxing,    depressing,   reflecting,
  75. persuading,  ...   and  this  is  what
  76. MUZAK is about.  MUZAK, as far as I am
  77. concerned,    is    the    study    of
  78. manipulating   via  MUSIC.   The  word
  79. itself has been invented by Germans in
  80. Munich, but I am afraid, I am not able
  81. to  tell you what the meaning of 'ZAK'
  82. here  is.   Now,  I  would like to get
  83. over  to  the  daily  importance  that
  84. MUZAK  plays  in  our  society  today.
  85. Just  go  to your nearest supermarket,
  86. step  in and what do you hear?  Right.
  87. You  will  here  a  smooth  tune  from
  88. somewhere,  but  normally you will not
  89. be  able to face the direction.  Those

  92. @t5tunes you hear are perfectly arranged!
  93. There   is   nothing   disturbing   or
  94. exciting   in   them,   but  they  are
  95. intensifly  manipulating,  because  of
  96. the  "smooth"  arrangement.  The human
  97. ear  filters the music as unimportant,
  98. so  that  you  will  not  listen to it
  99. properly,     realizing     it    only
  100. indirectly.  The effect is the same as
  101. if  you  were  watching  a  movie with
  102. subliminal  advertising.   You will be
  103. in  the  mood for uncritical consuming
  104. and  therefore, you will buy more than
  105. normally  (you  maybe know the effect,
  106. when   you   are   standing   outside,
  107. wondering why one bottle of Coke costs
  108. you  25,-DM  again(YUK!)).   Just some
  109. more  examples:   MUZAK is used in big
  110. halls  (tube!)  to make claustrophobic
  111. people relax and you also will find it
  112. at  your  dentist  in order to get the
  113. @^
  114. @t5same    effect.    In   big   offices,
  115. sometimes sounds like tweeting birdies
  116. are   used  to  get  a  more  friendly
  117. atmosphere.   In  asylums  for  people
  118. suffering from psychatristic illnesses
  119. ( e.g.  depressions ), MUZAK will help
  120. to  speed  up  the process to get back
  121. well.   The  list  goes  on  and on...
  122. MUZAK  is  also used to prevent people
  123. from  doing  things, for example happy
  124. music  is played at places, where alot
  125. of  people  tried  to committ suicide.
  126. The most neat try to get this effect I
  127. think  was the one from GREMLIN.  They
  128. tried to prevent us from copying their
  129. game  LOTUS  ESPRIT  II,  by playing a
  130. sample   like,"I   won't   copy   this
  131. game,"in  the  main  tune (information
  132. taken from CRUSADERS EUROCHARTS #14) -
  133. nice,  eh?   Now you should be able to
  134. face  the difference between MUSIC and

  137. @t5MUZAK.    You   maybe   ask   yourself
  138. now:"Ok, now I know the important (and
  139. quite  boring) difference, but why the
  140. hell  is  it  that  important  to this
  141. Freak?" You are right, this is not the
  142. most important topic of all times, but
  143. I  think,  it is quite interesting how
  144. people  get influenced amd manipulated
  145. by  subliminal messages - positivly or
  146. negativly!  Also, you can take this as
  147. an  endeavour  of  mine  to bann those
  148. uproars          of          unskilled
  149. writing-techniques             (called
  150. scene-slang)   from  better  DiskMags.
  151. NEVER  EVER  USE  MUZAK  TO TALK ABOUT
  152. MUSIC AGAIN!!!  Pheew, feels better...
  153. Well,  now  you  may  make up your own
  154. mind  about being manipulated by MUZAK
  155. (or  by literal devices of mine (YUK!)
