- @f00@t5Hello, musians and other mates You
- might think, this is just another
- boring article containing,
- "The-ultimate-guide-to-compose-and-arra
- nge-m usic". One of those articles,
- you really do not need, because you
- know how to create music in a perfect
- style and are just reading this crap
- to see the major mistakes, the fool
- writing this, has made. Yes, I know
- this feeling of psycho-superiority
- very well... In this case however, I
- have to disappoint you, because this
- one is dealing with MUZAK and not with
- MUSIC. "Where's the difference?" You
- may ask now and this is, what this
- article is about. Then I first read
- @^
-
-
-
-
- @t5the expression "MUZAK" back in 1989, I
- thought that it is just one of those
- fabulous scene-expression, that make
- people appear cool and professional.
- In fact, today I think, it makes you
- appear a monosyllabic low-budget
- clown... ), but that is not the point
- at all. MUZAK has a wide deeper
- meaning and I think it is worth to
- choose this difference between MUSIC
- and MUZAK as a topic for this article.
- But first let us have a look on the
- definition of MUSIC. I will take my
- biiig dictionary and... Just a
- second... dumdidum... Master,
- milkshake, moon... Ah, yes! There it
- is: MUSIC; (fem.) the art of sounds;
- @#
- @^
- @t5one of the most ancient forms of human
- cultural interchange; through internal
- rationalising changes of the
- soundsystem, each culture build up its
- own autarc system; in addition, the
- choice of natural instruments depended
- on the historical background;
- stilistically, music stands in direct
- relation to other forms of art. Very
- important and quite boring indeed! As
- we all know, there are alot of
- different variations in music. The
- most significant one is of course the
- one from ancient or classic style to
- modern style. Of course there are
- alot of variations in classic, but
- even more in modern style - just think
- of Rock'n'Roll, Pop, Heavy Metall,
- Reggae, Ska, Bluebeat, Blues, Soul,
- Funk, Punk, Hardcore, Acid, Techno,
- Techno-House, ... . Those are just
- @^
- @t5different types, according to
- variation in style, but there is
- another factor of variying: THE
- INTENSION OF THE COMPOSER!!! Music
- can be, for example, aggressive,
- relaxing, depressing, reflecting,
- persuading, ... and this is what
- MUZAK is about. MUZAK, as far as I am
- concerned, is the study of
- manipulating via MUSIC. The word
- itself has been invented by Germans in
- Munich, but I am afraid, I am not able
- to tell you what the meaning of 'ZAK'
- here is. Now, I would like to get
- over to the daily importance that
- MUZAK plays in our society today.
- Just go to your nearest supermarket,
- step in and what do you hear? Right.
- You will here a smooth tune from
- somewhere, but normally you will not
- be able to face the direction. Those
- @#
- @^
- @t5tunes you hear are perfectly arranged!
- There is nothing disturbing or
- exciting in them, but they are
- intensifly manipulating, because of
- the "smooth" arrangement. The human
- ear filters the music as unimportant,
- so that you will not listen to it
- properly, realizing it only
- indirectly. The effect is the same as
- if you were watching a movie with
- subliminal advertising. You will be
- in the mood for uncritical consuming
- and therefore, you will buy more than
- normally (you maybe know the effect,
- when you are standing outside,
- wondering why one bottle of Coke costs
- you 25,-DM again(YUK!)). Just some
- more examples: MUZAK is used in big
- halls (tube!) to make claustrophobic
- people relax and you also will find it
- at your dentist in order to get the
- @^
- @t5same effect. In big offices,
- sometimes sounds like tweeting birdies
- are used to get a more friendly
- atmosphere. In asylums for people
- suffering from psychatristic illnesses
- ( e.g. depressions ), MUZAK will help
- to speed up the process to get back
- well. The list goes on and on...
- MUZAK is also used to prevent people
- from doing things, for example happy
- music is played at places, where alot
- of people tried to committ suicide.
- The most neat try to get this effect I
- think was the one from GREMLIN. They
- tried to prevent us from copying their
- game LOTUS ESPRIT II, by playing a
- sample like,"I won't copy this
- game,"in the main tune (information
- taken from CRUSADERS EUROCHARTS #14) -
- nice, eh? Now you should be able to
- face the difference between MUSIC and
- @#
- @^
- @t5MUZAK. You maybe ask yourself
- now:"Ok, now I know the important (and
- quite boring) difference, but why the
- hell is it that important to this
- Freak?" You are right, this is not the
- most important topic of all times, but
- I think, it is quite interesting how
- people get influenced amd manipulated
- by subliminal messages - positivly or
- negativly! Also, you can take this as
- an endeavour of mine to bann those
- uproars of unskilled
- writing-techniques (called
- scene-slang) from better DiskMags.
- NEVER EVER USE MUZAK TO TALK ABOUT
- MUSIC AGAIN!!! Pheew, feels better...
- Well, now you may make up your own
- mind about being manipulated by MUZAK
- (or by literal devices of mine (YUK!)
- ). See you in the next article...
